Hidden caries is a frequent oral manifestation and it is difficult to achieve clinical diagnosis, being considered a challenge to the dentist. Several hypotheses have been described, from intense fluoride exposure, specific microflora, occlusal fissure defects, anatomical complexity of the occlusal surface to pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption. This paper aims a literature review about this entity approaching its concepts, etiology and diagnose alternatives, alerting the dental practitioners to consider the association of different diagnose methods in their patients.
