This paper addresses the issue of university archives, directed by questioning the contribution of Brazilian university archives for the development of public policies file. The theoretical recounts a brief history of the origins of universities in the world and in Brazil, presents the functions and objectives proposed for these institutions and contextualizes the university archives and the archives of universities. It is complemented with the concepts of public policy and policy files. The main objective is to analyze the contributions of university archives for the expansion of Brazilian public policies file. Through literature research and documentary, focusing on the analysis of the actions of university archives, there will be a link between the themes of the papers presented at events in the area and reported in the annals in the period from 1991 to 2000, and the development of public policies files. The description of the file system at Unicamp - structure, history, rules and activities - is understood as an example of implementing archival policies for public universities. It ends with the story of the activities of managing documents within the Document Management System File (SIGA) public administration and reflects on the possible contribution of university archives for the expansion of public policies file.
