dc.description.abstractFamily farming in Brazil is composed primarily of small farms. More specifically in Rio Grande do Sul, colonization took so many of these properties, and have small areas of land, with these areas are inserted in places that should be reserved for the preservation of natural resources, both on family farms and in lots of land reform. In this sense, the work of conviction about the need and importance of the reserve and recovery of areas that touches on the need for families to produce food in order to stay in farming. Therefore, developing tools that combine preservation with food production is a challenge that brings numerous benefits and allows to generate discussion and reflection about the subject. The Center for Popular Alternative Technologies - CETAP has been developing over the course of its history, several studies and projects in the area, showing, through the development of agroforestry, which is not only possible to combine conservation and food production, but this is a further step in promoting agroecology with families accompanied the body, work that is now taken for settlements accompanied by the team. The present work aims to investigate the potential and challenges of using agroforestry as a strategy to encourage among farmers / settlers recovery in areas of permanent preservation work of the Center for Popular Alternative Technologies - CETAP, through the perception of actors involved in process and how this work has been developed within the institution. What we see is that the use of agroforestry is an important tool to encourage the reclamation and enter the debate and reflection on the importance of establishing conservation areas even in small units so as to bring the discussion of agroecology, sustainability and preservation for the day-to-day families.
