The rising of elderly population brings a large vulnerability to acquire chronic illnesses, which can implicate the functional ability of the elderly. In this way, he demands a necessity of differenced care from his family. As a result, hospice care shows up as an important modality in the assistance to people that need care, as elderlies. Considering that the elderly s family also needs attention, in this context, there is the interest to investigate how families have been experiencing the home care of elderly. Therefore, the research aimed to, generally, describe the experiences of families about organization, and assist the needs of care of the elderly in hospice care; and as specific: to describe the family experiences forward the necessity of hospice care to elderly; to describe strategies of organization used by families to care of this elderly in hospice care; to describe the perception of the family forward the necessities to care about the elderly in hospice care. It is a qualitative research with an exploratory and descriptive approach. Six families were the participants of the research, which had elderlies in the Serviço de Internação Domiciliar (Service of Hospice Care) from the Hospital Universitário de Santa Maria (Teaching Hospital of Santa Maria), totalizing 13 people. Data collection occurred since February to May of 2013 through interviews with the performing of genograms of families and observation. Interviews were done at the family home. Data was submitted to thematic analysis and presented under the way of three articles. The first article We thought that we couldn t: the family in front of the hospice care of elderly created the follow categories: the family in front of the (in)dependency of elderly s care; changes in the needs of family care to elderly; the family provides the continuing of care at home. The second article Organization of family in care to elderly in hospice care allowed to notice that the strategies of organization used by families are related to: the division of care between members of family; the management of care between elderly and family; the dealing with conflicts in family. In the third article Caring of elderly in hospice care in their families perspectives , the categories were these: 24 hours of doing anything : needs of care to the family; It s hard, but it s not an overburden : perceptions of family about the care to elderly in hospice care; Life totally changes : repercussions and changes noticed by the family. With the results, it is concluded that the family forward the hospice care to elderly experiences complex situations, in which the activity to care is noticed as tiredness and wearing. In addition, it needs a lot of dedication and renounces. However, at the same time, it can be highlighted that families effort themselves to give wellbeing and a care with quality to the elderly.
