This article is the result of an investigation into the use of Educational Linux in school activities. The Federal Government is sending computers to schools provided with free software, to be used in the students’ teaching-learning process and in the teachers’ formation. The aim of this research, characterized as descriptive, as case study, was to check how Educational Linux is being used in schools. Were surveyed 27 state and local public schools that received MEC computers, in five counties in the Central Sierra of Rio Grande do Sul: Sobradinho, Arroio do Tigre, Segredo, Passa Sete e Lagoa Bonita do Sul. The questionnaire was the research instrument to data collection. The results show that schools are struggling to enter and explore the features of Educational Linux and the TICs in school activities.
