Republicanismo bíblico independentista. El caso de la “instrucción” de Antonio Berney (Santiago, 1780-1781)

Abstract

El artículo tiene como tema general la interpretación republicana de la Biblia, que sirvió de fundamento en proyectos independentistas anglo e hispanoamericanos. El estudio se concentra en la Instrucción escrita por Antonio Berney en el marco de la denominada “Conspiración de los tres Antonios” (Santiago, 1780-1781), la que pretendía independizar al reino de Chile de la monarquía española y establecer una república en este territorio. Se concluye que la “Instrucción” viene a ser uno de los primeros textos hispanoamericanos en recurrir a la antedicha exégesis, y que el republicanismo bíblico al que adhiere funcionaría como fundamento y modelo del nuevo gobierno a instalar, de donde se sigue que la sedición puede ser comprendida no sólo como un proyecto político sino también como un proyecto teológico-político.

The general theme of this text is the republican interpretation of the Bible, which founded both Anglo-American and Spanish American independence projects. The study focuses on the ‘Instrucción’ written by Antonio Berney in the context of the so called “Conspiracy of the three Antonios” (Santiago, 1780- 1781), which pretended to emancipate the Chilean kingdom from the Spanish monarchy and to establish a republic in this territory. It is concluded that the ‘Instrucción’ is one of the first Spanish American texts that turns to the aformentioned exegesis, and that the biblical republicanism would have functioned as a fundament and as a model for the new government to be installed, from where it can be said that the sedition can be understood not just as a political project, but also as a theological political project.
