Since June 1964, a contraceptive program with IUD's has been in operation in the western district of the city of Santiago.* * The clinical aspects of the program, such as the insertions of IUD's, were the responsibilities of the physicians of the Obstetrical and Gynecological Services of the hospitals, San Juan de Dios and Felix Bulnes. Up to July 1 1967, 19,344 women had accepted the method. The present paper analyzes the results obtained during the 3 years. To analyze the results obtained with follow-up, a life table technique has been employed. There have been two kinds of acceptors: those in whom insertions were made during the intermenstrual period, and those in whom insertions were made immediately after an abortion or within the first 5 days after a normal delivery. Insertions have been analyzed according to the type of IUD and the results were compared between insertions made intermenstrually and those made after delivery or abortion. © 1970.
