A study of ternary complex formation between nickel, pyridine and picrate ion has been made. The metal - pyridine complex reacts with picrate to give an insoluble, stable, green precipitate. Conditions of formation, solubility and other properties of the complex have been studied, together with its composition. Above 105 °C a stable compound, Ni(py)<inf>2</inf>(pic)<inf>2</inf>, with a high formula mass, is formed that is suitable for use in the gravimetric determination of nickel. © The Royal Society of Chemistry, 1982.
