dc.description.abstract | The use of Electroconvulsive Therapy for pharmacology treatment resistant schizophrenia currently raises different positions about its utility and effectiveness in treat the broad spectrum symptoms of these patients. Aim: To determinate the effectiveness of electroconvulsive therapy for pharmacology treatment resistant schizophrenia. Materials and methods: A systematic review was done. It included two randomized controlled trials and seven semi experimental design trials. Twelve articles were excluded and five was ongoing not finished trials. Outcomes: The available evidence supports the use of electroconvulsive therapy as adjuvant treatment to pharmacotherapy for treatment resistant schizophrenic patients. Four semis experimental design trials shown clinically significant reduce of the BPRS scale score as the two randomized controlled trials shown. The other three semis experimental design trials, shown clinically significant reduce of the PANSS scale score. These outcomes occur in the context of few controlled clinical trials available. Conclusions: The ECT combined with antipsychotic drugs, provides the best therapeutic option in acute and maintenance treatment for treatment resistant schizophrenia. It is necessary to conduct clinical trials to provide a higher level of evidence. | |
