dc.description.abstract | The prevalence of nonadherence in the maintenance treatment of Bipolar
Affective Disorder is in the ranges of 20% and 60%, speaking various patient-related factors,
disease, treatment, and the relationship with the therapist, associated with increased
morbidity, mortality and risk of hospital readmissions. This study aimed to determine the
prevalence and factors associated with nonadherence in maintenance treatment of adult
patients diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder. Methods: Cross sectional study included
124 patients that visited the months of November and December, was applied structutured
questionnaire that include variables associated factors demographics, related to the patient,
with illness, treatment, therapeutic relationship and health system, related to the family; the
Global Impression Scale Modified for Bipolar Disorder (CGI - BPM-M) and family apgar
Results: The prevalence of non-adherence to maintenance drug treatment was 29.8%.
Since this is greater for women (64.9%) than men (35.1%), although this difference was not
statistically significant (p = 0.17). The statistically significant factors were related to increased
severity of disease OR 1.9, history of nonadherence (38% P = 0,001), negative perception of
the therapist, the less insight (87% RP4.65), greater stigma (50% RP 6.2) , have no family
member to remember taking the drug (73%). Conclusions: The prevalence ranged from
studies by Scott, Vieta et al, associated factors such as stigma, history of non-compliance,
no family support, a poor insight into the habit of smoking can be identified from the
approach Patient and modified to improve adherence | |
