Representation of victims’ suffering in violent conflicts: scope, obstacles and perspectives

Abstract

The main objective of this article is to analyze the types of moral feelings that victims’ testimonies should arouse among members of a political community that purports to be democratic, inclusive and respective of human rights. Hand in hand with Avishai Margalit, Tzvetan Todorov, Peter Strawson, Martha Nussbaum, Elizabeth Spelman and Manuel Reyes Mate, throughout the text we defend the thesis that the narrationsand representations of the victims’ unfair suffering should be able to arouse indignation and informed compassion among citizens. To demonstrate the scope and meaning of this thesis, we will analyze two of the most serious problems faced by a policy that privileges the victims. The first is related to the distortions that may take place when the victims’ narrations are heard and that are largely associated with a kind of sacredness that is assigned to those who testify on the violence they have suffered. The second issue we will analyze is related to the manner in which the members of a political community represent said suffering. Specifically, we will discuss the different forms of trivialization that citizens may give the narrations thatrepresent the damage. In the last part of the text, we shall analyze the exemplary testimony of Harriet Jacobs with the intention of showing how a testimony may generate informed indignation and compassion among the audience.

O propósito central do artigo é analisar que tipo de sentimentos morais deveriam despertar os testemunhos das vitimas nos membros de uma comunidade política que pretende ser democrática, inclusiva e respeitosa dos direitos humanos. Da mão de Avishai Margalit, Tzvetan Todorov, Peter Strawson, Martha Nussbaum, Elizabeth Spelman e Manuel Reyes Mate, ao longo do texto defenderemos a tese de que as narrações e representações do sofrimento injusto padecido pelas vitimas devem ser capazes de despertar uma indignação e compaixão informada nos cidadãos. Para mostrar o alcance e significado desta tese, analisaremos dois dos problemas mais sérios aos que se enfrenta uma política da memória que privilegia às vitimas. O primeiro deles tem que ver com as distorsões que podem se apresentar quando se escutam os relatos das vitimas e que em grande parte estão ligadas a uma espécie de sacralidade que se lhe atribui a quem testifica acerca da violência que têm padecido. O segundo problema que estudaremos, está relacionado com a forma como osmembros de uma comunidade política representam este sofrimento. Em concreto, discutiremos as diferentes formas de banalização que podem dar-se entre os cidadãos na hora de interpretar as narrações que representam o dano. Na última parte do texto, revisaremos o testemunho exemplar de Harriet Jacobs com o fim de mostrar de que maneira um testemunho pode gerar na sua audiência sentimentos de indignação e compaixão informadas.
