In this systematic review of the literature we sought to describe the mechanism of endocrine disruption in the metabolism of iodine secondary to perchlorates and to evaluate the impact of perchlorate intoxication in the onset or worsening of thyroid disease. In the review of the last ten years of the medical literature, four investigations are found that relate thyroid disease with perchlorate intoxication and six investigations relating the biochemical mechanism of metabolic disruption and perchlorates. Clinical studies showed that exposure to perchlorates is not associated with changes in thyroid function in women in the first month of pregnancy. Another study suggests that elevated levels of maternal perchlorate is associated with impaired cognitive development of the fetus. But another study shows the increase in neonatal TSH levels associated with high levels of perchlorate. In contrast, another study was found which showed that adult women did not associate with perchlorates with alterations in thyroid function or generation of thyroid disease, showing a lack of correlation between the studies and clinical evidence since the change in levels of TSH in populations susceptible to alterations in thyroid function such as women in pregnancy, fetuses and children, are a problem of high impact since the definitive side effects of thyroid disease, impact on the quality of life and functionality of these populations added to the high global distribution of perchlorates.
