Resumen
Introduction: The objective of this study is to describe the results of red-cell transfusion therapy in critically ill patients at the Intensive Care Units of the Fundacion Santa Fe de Bogota for a period of two years, according of two transfusion’s thresholds previously reported at literature.
Material and method: A cross-sectional study was designed. Two groups of patients who had been transfused were evaluated First group was integrated by patients with hemoglobin levels <7g/dl 45 and the second group was integrated by patients with hemoglobin levels <9g/dl.
Results: Statistically significant difference between the two groups was found in the number of transfused red-cells by patients (p=0,028) and number of days of stay in the ICU (0,023) which were higher in the transfusion group with hemoglobin level <7 g/dl. No significant differences between all-cause mortality between the two groups (20.0% vs 18.1%, p = 0.139) were found.
Discussion: Contrary to what was reported in the literature, we found a higher proportion of transfusions in patients with lower hemoglobin concentrations. The all-cause mortality between two thresholds of different transfusion in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of Santa Fe de Bogota Foundation, is similar to that reported in the literature. With this study, the need to continue generating information and future research is created and could be the beginning of a research group in transfusion therapy in the institution.
Level of evidence: III retrospective comparative study
