The research assesses the static economic effects arising from a recent proposal to reform the current tariff structure applied in Colombia. The proposal, put forward by the government, was intended to rationalize this structure and to favor an enhancement of Colombian industry’s competitiveness. Implementation of the reform was discarded in view of strong opposition from the private sector. The assessment is carried out by means of a multi-region computable general equilibrium model. Its results indicate that not implementing the reform entails forgoing welfare gains that accrue to the economy when it is concurrently implemented with the trade agreements that conform the country’s trade agenda.
