dc.description.abstract | Objective: Determine if there is an independent association between the epicardial fat tissue values and the extent and severity of coronary disease.
Materials and methods: 69 patients with coronary disease studied with coronary angiography were analyzed and measured their epicardial fat tissue with transthoracic echocardiography in 2D mode. The results were correlated with two Score of severity for coronary disease (Gensini – Syntax) and with the traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Bivariade statistical analysis and logistic regression analysis were performed in order to determine their association.
Results: There was no correlation between the epicardial fat tissue values and the severity of coronary arterial disease. There also was evidence of a slight correlation with the abdominal perimeter values. In patients with unstable angina, epicardial fat tissues values, were higher in comparison with patients with acute myocardial infarction.
Conclusions: Epicardial fat tissue does not have an independent association with the severity of the coronary disease nor with cardiovascular risk factors. This suggests that in clinical practice it must not be used as cardio metabolic risk marker. | |
