The purpose of this investigation is to explain the changes experienced in the form of struggle, both political and armed, inside the Provisional IRA. Changes experienced by the emergence of the American civil rights movements, the end of the Cold War and the delegitimation of anti-imperialist movements, the Irish economic boom and the expansion of the values of the European Union. These changes can be explained by the way the group alters its perception of the role it plays within the conflict and the way this role and its role performance are influenced by international phenomena. By using the role theory approach from the constructivist perspective, it is expected through this investigation to describe the influence of external political phenomena in the development of this particular group in the Northern Ireland conflict.
