As a university topic and area of knowledge, economics seems to have been consolidated during the 18th century in Europe under the name of political economy. The term ‘economics’ only came into popular use towards 1900. The London School of Economics, perhaps the first school dedicated to the study of the field, was founded in 1895. In Colombia, some courses in political economy were taught in the 18th century at the Universidad del Rosario, the Universidad Nacional, and the Universidad Externado. While there is scant historical evidence to pinpoint the institution that offered the first formal Colombian economics program, some possibilities are the Universidad Javeriana, the Universidad Nacional and the Escuela Nacional de Comercio.
