Resumen
Congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia is a disease of low incidence, but
with significant morbidity in patients affected by it. It is a challenge for the
pediatric orthopedist because there is no consensus on its etiology and
treatment. The difficulty in handling, is in obtaining and maintaining union
or consolidation and simultaneously provide a functional limb. The
purpose of this study is to describe the results in the management of this
disease in the Roosevelt Children"s Orthopedic Institute. METHODOLOGY
A retrospective review that included all patients with this disease, between
1980-2010, an institution specializing in child orthopedics IV level.
RESULTS
In total 26 patients were found, with the right leg most affected by this
disease. 24 patients achieved consolidation of pseudoarthrosis after
several surgical procedures, with a median time to consolidate after their
final treatment of 10.1 months. Treatment was conducted over the
structural allograft and complications were the angular deformity and length
discrepancy. DISCUSSION : This is a disease of high complexity, requiring a multidisciplinary approach
and multiple treatments in order to achieve the consolidation of the tibia
and with a high incidence of orthopedic complications. Further studies are
needed to address the problems of these patients.
