This study evaluates the existence of capital punishment in Colombia in formal and real vision, through the El Salado slaughter, in which the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia takes the law in their hands executing over 60 civilians. Initially there is a description of the death penalty throughout the history, giving a brief overview of what it represents and has represented to Western civilization; also the study evaluates the concept and types of capital punishment. The following describes the history of the death penalty in Colombia. Subsequently, a brief description of the events that occurred during the El Salado slaughter takes place. Finally the study evaluates the concept of capital punishment and what has been the formal and real vision of its implementation as well as the responsibility of the State in the implementation of this by non-institutional armed actors. It also assesses the existence of the death penalty from three points of view: from the state, from the victims and from the perpetrators.
