Resumen
We present the description of Colombian scientific production on social medicine and basic
medicine disciplines using ISI-Thopmson data base for the period between 1975 and 2005. From
the characterization of social medicine we identify the lowest production rate on health disciplines;
we also observe that the higher citation rate on this discipline is presented on articles classified in
more than one discipline, showing that not only the production is low but also its impact;
conversely, we observe that basic medicine has higher production rates and citations per articles.
Furthermore, we identify the importance of public health for social medicine production, so we
decide to characterize this category alone. Moreover, we find in both disciplines, especially on
social medicine, that there are few articles which concentrate the higher number of citations; this
reflects the lower medium impact of social medicine articles. Finally, we observe that the highest
cited articles on social medicine have special characteristics, such as international collaboration,
public and private interactions, and non conventional procedures.
