Resumen
Introduction: Patients with primary headaches are predisposed to develop a secondary overuse headache of analgesics. In our environment, the easy procurement of drugs without medical formula increases its frequency of occurrence. Aim: Describe the epidemiological, clinical, and treatment characteristics of patients with primary headaches and secondary overuse headaches of analgesics served in the special headache program of the Instituto Neurológico de Colombia in the period 2014-2015. Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study. Headache characteristics, comorbidities, disability and drug consumption pattern were evaluated. Results: 834 patients diagnosed with migraine were included with overuse of analgesics, 85. 1% with chronic migraine. 87. 6% of patients were women and had 44 years on average. Half of the patients were taking analgesics all weekdays (P25-P75: 4 - 7 days); consuming, on average, three analgesics / day (SD: 1. 9). Most patients had a high intake of simple analgesics (95. 2%), NSAIDs (92. 2%) and analgesics combined (89. 2%); 51% consumed 14. 6% opioid and only consumed triptans. Conclusion: The identification of this secondary headache is vital for a proper treatment. The counter drug use affects the optimal management of this entity associated with primary headaches, especially migraine
