Resumen
Objective: The aim was to establish reference standards for waist circumference measured in Colombia children and adolescent aged 9 to 17. 9 years who participated in “The FUPRECOL Study”. Methods: Cross-sectional study. A sample of 5. 921 healthy Colombian youth (children n=3. 005) and adolescents (n=2. 916) participated in the study. Height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and sexual maturation status were measured. Centile smoothed curves for the 3rd, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th and 97th percentiles were calculated and to compare them to international references. Results: Overall population (n=5. 921), 57. 0 % were women (mean age 12. 7 ± 2. 3 years old). In all ages, the waist circumference was higher in boys than in girls. The increase between 50th- 97th percentiles by age was 15. 7 cm in boys of 16. 0 years old and 9-9. 9 cm in girls of 11-11. 9 years old. Overall, our 50th percentile was lower than Peru and India with except for the research from India, Venezuela (Merida), US and Spain. Conclusion: Values reference charts for waist circumference specific for age and sex, obtained from children and adolescents from Bogota, Colombia, are provided. They may be used regionally, both for nutritional assessment and to predict cardiovascular risks in early age.
