The common assumption  -fashionable  anew due tO the September  the 1 Fh e vents- that the lslamic civilisation represents  a threat to the west is discussed in this article. The main objection made by the author has to do with the impossibilit y the lslamic world has of constituting itself as a unified block, given its heterogeneit y, at a cultural leve/, as well as regarding its political  and economic interests. The case of Afghanistan is explored as an example of the heterogeneit y and the lack of unity experienced in the lslamic world, from an interna/ perspective and from the position taken by other Muslim countries, which is far from being unitary.
