Resumen
The research activities of the COPAS Sur-Austral Program have focused on four thematic areas: Oceanographic Monitoring Systems, Carrying Capacity, Marine Biosecurity, and new research for fisheries management. In this second period, a large part of our efforts were directed at the submission of scientific manuscripts for publication,
and at the development of potentially transferable products for public, private and academic sectors. During 2009 and early 2010, scientific results were shared through 95 presentations in congresses, meetings, workshops and conferences at the national and international level. Fifty-two of these presentations were
developed exclusively on topics of the COPAS Sur-Austral Program. We generated 19 publications ISI and 17 manuscripts were submitted. We highlight the special volume of Continental Shelf Research dedicated to the Chilean Patagonia (Oceanography of the Chilean Patagonia) which is currently on revision, with the participation of 3 investigators of the COPAS Sur-Austral Program, as invited editors. Fourteen manuscripts are the exclusive product of research carried out through the COPAS Sur-Austral Program dealing with aspects related to the water column (primary production, nutrients), sediments (organic carbon), effects of freshwater supply, and the flow of organic matter and plankton dynamics, for different areas and fjords of the Chilean Patagonia. During the reported period, the COPAS Center continued its work on capacity building. A total of 21undergraduate students worked on their theses, 17 are incremental (belonging to the COPAS Sur-Austral Program) and their research topics are framed within the strategic areas of the Program: Marine Biosecurity
(ISAv, molecular and cellular culture), Fisheries (connectivity, larvae, population parameters), and Oceanographic Observation of fjords and channels (buoyancy circulation, internal seiches). Of the 17 COPAS
Sur-Austral students, 11 defended their theses successfully during 2009 and graduated. On the other hand, a total of 27 graduate students worked on their theses at the COPAS Center under the guidance of tutors who participate in the COPAS Sur-Austral Program: 9 are Master students and 18 are PhD students. Of the total 27
students, 6 (4 Masters and 2 PhD) are incremental theses developed through the COPAS Sur-Austral Program, all of them from the University of Concepción, and are currently in progress. Extramural funding has been important for the hiring of postdocs. We report a total of 6 Postdoctoral Fellows, 3 are directly associated to the
COPAS Center and funded by FONDECYT, and 3 are working intensively toward the goals of the COPAS Sur-
Austral Program (1 is funded directly by BFP funds, and 2 are linked to our associated institution CIEP, one of them inserted in the salmon farming industry).
