The present Phd thesis deals with the impacts of international trade on theenvironment. In four essays, this workproposes going beyond conventional indicators that solely represent the domestic impacts on the national environment or the direct environmental pressures of international trade. Measuring goods and services traded in terms of the total, i.e. direct and indirect, environmental impacts accumulated along the entire production chain provides a more holistic view of countries societal metabolism and environmental respnsibilities on a global scale.
