Resumen
This study examines in detail how China, in laying the foundations for rapid industrialisation in the next century, is coping with the opportunities and challenges posed by the new global technological and economic environment. Drawing on a thorough analysis of China's science and technology policies, institutions and manpower, it examines the reforms introduced int he past decade to improve both the domestic supply of new technology and to stimulate its diffusion. The study analyses China's capacity to assimilate foreign technology as a way to accelerate the industralisation process. Because successful technological change is closely tied to economic reform, the conculsion situates all these factors in the context of wider economic reforms.
