Resumen
Objective: Analyze the association between the level of physical activity and mood states in patients with breast cancer treated with curative intent. Methodology: Three hundred and fifty-four women were interviewed who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and signed the terms of free and informed consent. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) was used for the analysis of mood states and the Baecke questionnaire was used to measure the level of physical activity. The characterization of the sample was based on descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, median and percentage). The level of physical activity according to Baecke score was categorized in tertiles and was considered an independent variable. A means test with the scales of POMS was performed. For the association between physical activity level by Baecke score and POMS scales, we performed the t test and ANOVA for test of means. There was error á = 5% for all tests, i.e., the results were considered statistically significant when p <0.05. Results: When comparing the mean score in POMS according to the Baecke physical activity divided into tertiles, we note an association between physical activity with vigor (p <0.001) and fatigue (p = 0.019). Conclusion: Physical activity was a factor related to better mood states in women with breast cancer treated with curative intent. © Copyright Moreira Jr. Editora. 72 3 70 76 Key, T.I., Verkasalo, P.K., Banks, E., Epidemiology of breast cancer (2001) Lancet Oncol, 2, pp. 133-140 Ferlay, J., Autier, P., Boniol, M., Heanue, M., Colombet, M., Boyle, P., Estimates of the cancer incidence and mortality in Europe in 2006 (2007) Ann Oncol, 18, pp. 581-592 Curado, M.P., Edwards, H.R., Shin, H.R., (2007) Cancer Incidence in Five Continents, 9 (160). , France: IARC IARC Scientific Publications Ministério da Saúde, Instituto Nacional de Câncer, (2011) Estimativa/2012 Incidência de Câncer No Brasil, , Rio de Janeiro: INCA Pandey, M., Singh, S.P., Behere, P.B., Roy, S.K., Singh, S., Shukla, V.K., Quality of life in patients with early and advanced carcinoma of the breast (2000) Eur J Surg Oncol, 26, pp. 20-24 Thorsen, L., Skovlund, E., Stromme, S.B., Hornslien, K., Dahl, A.A., Fossa, S.D., Effectiveness of physical activity on cardiorespiratory fitness and health-related quality of life in young and middle-aged cancer patients shortly after chemotherapy (2005) J Clin Oncol, 23, pp. 2378-2388 Adamsen, L., Midtgaard, J., Rorth, M., Feasibility, physical capacity, and health benefits of a multidimensional exercise program for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy (2003) Support Care Cancer, 11, pp. 707-716 Dorn, J., Vena, J., Brasure, J., Lifetime physical activity and breast cancer risk in pre-and postmenopausal women (2003) Med Sci Sports Exerc, 35, pp. 278-285 Mock, V., Dow, K.H., Meares, C.J., Effects of exercise on fatigue, physical functioning and emotional distress during radiation therapy for breast cancer (1997) Oncol Nurs Forum, 24, pp. 991-1000 Brown, J.K., Byers, T., Doyle, C., Nutrition and physical activity during and after cancer treatment: An American Cancer Society guide for informed choices (2003) CA Cancer J Clin, 53, pp. 268-291 Hong, S., Bardwell, A., Loki, N., Correlates of physical activity level in breast cancer survivors participating in the Women's Healthy Eating and Living (WHEL) Study (2007) Breast Cancer Res Treat, 101, pp. 225-232 Florindo, A.A., Latorre, M.R.D.O., Jaime, P.C., Tanaka, T., Zerbini, F., Metodologia para a avaliação da atividade física habitual em homens com 50 anos ou mais (2004) Rev Saúde Públ, 38, pp. 307-314 Ainsworth, B.E., Haskell, W.L., Whitt, M.C., Irwin, M.L., Swartz, A.M., Strath, S.J., Compendium of physical activities: An update of activity codes and METintensities (2000) Med Sci Sports Exerc, 32, pp. 498-504 Brandão, M.R.F., (1996) Perfil Sócio-Psicológico da Equipe Nacional de Voleibol Masculino: Uma Análise À Luz da Ecologia Do Desenvolvimento Humano, , Santa Maria Dissertação de Mestrado-Universidade Federal de Santa Maria Garber, C.E., Blissmer, B., Deschenes, M.R., American College of Sports Medicine position stand.
