Resumen
Valuable knowledge about schizophrenia has been recently generated for deciphering its pathobiology and revealing biomarkers. However, efforts are still needed, especially if we take in account that this debilitating mental disorder affects approximately 30 million people worldwide. Considering that schizophrenia is a result of a complex interaction among environmental factors altered gene function and systematic differential protein expression, proteomics is likely to be a suitable tool for studying this disorder. Here we synthetize the main findings by proteomic studies and further directions to be taken in order to better comprehend the biochemistry of schizophrenia as well as reveal biomarkers. In addition, we summarize proteomic methodologies used in such studies. 40 1 16 19 Martins-de-Souza, D., Guest, P.C., Rahmoune, H., Bahn, S., Proteomic approaches to unravel the complexity of schizophrenia (2012) Expert Rev Proteomics., 9, pp. 97-108 Martins-De-Souza, D., Dias-Neto, E., Schmitt, A., Falkai, P., Gormanns, P., McCarrone, G., Proteome analysis of schizophrenia brain tissue (2010) World J Biol Psychiatry., 11, pp. 110-120 Martins-de-Souza, D., Gattaz, W.F., Schmitt, A., Rewerts, C., Marangoni, S., Novello, J.C., Alterations in oligodendrocyte proteins, calcium homeostasis and new potential markers in schizophrenia anterior temporal lobe are revealed by shotgun proteome analysis (2009) J Neural Transm., 116, pp. 275-289 Bergson, C., Levenson, R., Goldman-Rakic, P.S., Lidow, M.S., Dopamine receptor-interacting proteins: The Ca(2+) connection in dopamine signaling (2003) Trends Pharmacol Sci., 24, pp. 486-492 Martins-de-Souza, D., Proteome and transcriptome analysis suggests oligodendrocyte dysfunction in schizophrenia (2010) J Psychiatr Res., 44, pp. 149-156 Hakak, Y., Walker, J.R., Li, C., Wong, W.H., Davis, K.L., Buxbaum, J.D., Genome-wide expression analysis reveals dysregulation of myelinationrelated genes in chronic schizophrenia (2001) Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A., 98, pp. 4746-4751 Tkachev, D., Mimmack, M.L., Ryan, M.M., Wayland, M., Freeman, T., Jones, P.B., Oligodendrocyte dysfunction in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (2003) Lancet., 362, pp. 798-805 Martins-de-Souza, D., McCarrone, G., Wobrock, T., Zerr, I., Gormanns, P., Reckow, S., Proteome analysis of the thalamus and cerebrospinal fluid reveals glycolysis dysfunction and potential biomarkers candidates for schizophrenia (2010) J Psychiatr Res., 44, pp. 1176-1189 Huang, J.T., Wang, L., Prabakaran, S., Wengenroth, M., Lockstone, H.E., Koethe, D., Independent protein-profiling studies show a decrease in apolipoprotein A1 levels in schizophrenia CSF, brain and peripheral tissues (2008) Mol Psychiatry., 13, pp. 1118-1128 Martins-De-Souza, D., Wobrock, T., Zerr, I., Schmitt, A., Gawinecka, J., Schneider-Axmann, T., Different apolipoprotein E, apolipoprotein A1 and prostaglandin-H2 D-isomerase levels in cerebrospinal fluid of schizophrenia patients and healthy controls (2010) World J Biol Psychiatry., 11, pp. 719-728 Lee, Y., Morrison, B.M., Li, Y., Lengacher, S., Farah, M.H., Hoffman, P.N., Liu, Y., Oligodendroglia metabolically support axons and contribute to neurodegeneration (2012) Nature., 487, pp. 443-448 Jacquy, J., Wilmotte, J., Piraux, A., Noel, G., Cerebral blood flow patterns studied by rheoencephalography in schizophrenia (1976) Neuropsychobiology., 2, pp. 94-103 Marek, G.J., Behl, B., Bespalov, A.Y., Gross, G., Lee, Y., Schoemaker, H., Glutamatergic (N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor) hypofrontality in schizophrenia: Too little juice or a miswired brain?
