Resumen
The study compares NORPLANT® subdermal implants acceptors enrolled randomly for two different insertion procedures. One group (420 women) received the implants with the use of a scalpel according to the manufacturer's instructions. The other group (423 women) received the implant without an incision, directly through a sharpened trocar. The local signs and symptoms were observed at 7 and 30 days after insertion. Pain, tenderness, edema/ swelling, ecchymosis and defective scar were considered. Complication rates were low and no significant differences were found between the two procedures. Based on the data of this study, we recommend inserting NORPLANT® implants without the use of a scalpel. © 1991. 44 3 217 221 The Population Council NORPLANT®levonorgestrel implants, (1990) A Summary of Scientific Data, , New York The Population Council, (1990) Manual for Clinicians, , New York WHO, Facts about an implantable contraceptive: memorandum from a WHO meeting (1985) Bulletin of the World Health Organization, 63, p. 485 Díaz, Croxatto, Pavez, Miranda, Quinteros, Regulatión de la fertilidad por medio de implantes subcutáneos de progestágenos (1980) Revista Chilena de Obstetricia y Ginecología, 45, p. 316 Sivin, International experience with NORPLANT® and NORPLANT®-2 contraceptives (1988) Studies in Family Planning, 19, p. 81 Klavon, Grubb, Insertion site complications during the first year of NORPLANT® use (1990) Contraception, 41, p. 27 Hardy, Coutinho, Goodson, Study of the NORPLANT® user's reactions to its characteristics and symptoms during its use (1987) Report presented to the Population Council
