This study evaluated the effectiveness of different sealants applied to a nanofiller composite resin. Forty specimens of Filtek Z-350 were obtained after inserting the material in a 6x3 mm stainless steel mold followed by light activation for 20 s. The groups were divided (n=10) according to the surface treatment applied: Control group (no surface treatment), Fortify, Fortify Plus and Biscover LV. The specimens were subjected to simulated toothbrushing using a 200 g load and 250 strokes/min to simulate 1 week, 1, 3 and 6 months and 1 and 3 years in the mouth, considering 10,000 cycles equivalent to 1 year of toothbrushing. Oral-B soft-bristle-tip toothbrush heads and Colgate Total dentifrice at a 1:2 water-dilution were used. After each simulated time, surface roughness was assessed in random triplicate readings. The data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test at a 95% confidence level. The specimens were observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after each toothbrushing cycle. The control group was not significantly different (p>0.05) from the other groups, except for Fortify Plus (p<0.05), which was rougher. No significant differences (p>0.05) were observed at the 1-month assessment between the experimental and control groups. Fortify and Fortify Plus presented a rougher surface over time, differing from the baseline (p<0.05). Biscover LV did not differ (p>0.05) from the baseline at any time. None of the experimental groups showed a significantly better performance (p>0.05) than the control group at any time. SEM confirmed the differences found during the roughness testing. Surface penetrating sealants did not improve the roughness of nanofiller composite resin.236692697Coelho-de-Souza, F.H., Rocha, A.C., Rubini, A., Klein-Junior, C.A., Demarco, F.F., Influence of adhesive system and bevel preparation on fracture strength of teeth restored with composite resin (2010) Braz Dent J, 21, pp. 327-331Dall'Magro, E., Correr, A.B., Costa, A.R., Correr, G.M., Consani, R.L., Correr-Sobrinho, L., Effect of different photoactivation techniques on the bond strength of a dental composite (2010) Braz Dent J, 21, pp. 220-224de Paula, A.B., Tango, R.N., Sinhoreti, M.A., Alves, M.C., Puppin-Rontani, R.M., Effect of thickness of indirect restoration and distance from the light-curing unit tip on the hardness of a dualcured resin cement (2010) Braz Dent J, 21, pp. 117-122Dickinson, G.L., Leinfelder, K.F., Assessing the long-term effect of a surface penetrating sealant (1993) J Am Dent Assoc, 124, pp. 68-72dos Santos, P.H., Consani, S., Correr, S.L., Coelho, S.M.A., Effect of surface penetrating sealant on roughness of posterior composite resins (2003) Am J Dent, 16, pp. 197-201Dos Santos, P.H., Pavan, S., Consani, S., Sobrinho, L.C., Sinhoreti, M.A., Filho, J.N., In vitro evaluation of surface roughness of 4 resin composites after the toothbrushing process and methods to recover superficial smoothness (2007) Quintessence Int, 38, pp. e247-e253Wang, L., Garcia, F.C., de Araujo, P.A., Franco, E.B., Mondelli, R.F., Wear resistance of packable resin composites after simulated toothbrushing test (2004) J Esthet Restor Dent, 16, pp. 303-314. , discussion 14-15Azevedo, C.G.S., de Goes, M.F., Ambrosano, G.M.B., Chan, D.C.N., 1-year clinical study of indirect resin composite restorations luted with a self-adhesive resin cement: Effect of enamel etching (2012) Braz Dent J, 23, pp. 97-103Valentini, F., Oliveira, S.G., Guimarães, G.Z., Barbosa, R.P., Moraes, R.R., Effect of surface sealant on the color stability of composite resin restorations (2011) Braz Dent J, 22, pp. 365-368Delfino, C.S., Duarte Jr., S., Effect of the composite surface sealant application moment on marginal sealing of compactable composite resin restoration (2007) J Mater Sci Mater Med, 18, pp. 2257-2261Mitra, S.B., Wu, D., Holmes, B.N., An application of nanotechnology in advanced dental materials (2003) J Am Dent Assoc, 134, pp. 1382-1390Owens, B.M., Johnson, W.W., Effect of new generation surface sealants on the marginal permeability of Class V resin composite restorations (2006) Oper Dent, 31, pp. 481-488Lowe, R.A., Using BisCover surface sealant/polish on direct and indirect composite and bisacrylic provisional restorations (2004) Compend Contin Educ Dent, 25, pp. 400-401Cilli, R., de Mattos, M.C., Honorio, H.M., Rios, D., de Araujo, P.A., Prakki, A., The role of surface sealants in the roughness of composites after a simulated toothbrushing test (2009) J Dent, 37, pp. 970-977Guiraldo, R.D., Consani, S., Consani, R.L., Berger, S.B., Mendes, W.B., Sinhoreti, M.A., Comparison of silorane and methacrylatebased composite resins on the curing light transmission (2010) Braz Dent J, 21, pp. 538-542Shabayek, N.M., Hassan, F.M., Mobarak, E.H., Effect of using siloranebased resin compostie for restoring conservative cavities on the changes in cuspal deflection (2012) Oper Dent, , [Epub ahead of print.
