dc.descriptionPhonemic awareness is an important feature when learning English as a foreign language, as it is related to mastering an accurate pronunciation which does not interfere with understanding. The present study aims to compare and analyze the way fourteen Spanish speakers and English learners produce /ʃ/ & /tʃ/ segments, which are present in both Spanish and English languages, furthermore, this investigation was carried out under a quantitative paradigm. Additionally, for data gathering, two instruments were applied - a pretest and a post test - along with two training sessions to introduce students the correct pronunciation of each segment, all of this with the purpose of observing possible transference of pronunciation and phonemic awareness. Findings revealed that students show a clear tendency to remain with the same pronunciation made in their mother tongue. However, after having attended training sessions, students’ self awareness of pronunciation raised considerably, as they made differences in the manner each segment should be pronounced. Nevertheless, their pronunciation was still weak. It was also found that male and female students presented significantly different manners of pronouncing words, in terms of duration and intensity. Finally, this study will help to contribute to raise awareness of the importance of including phonetics as a crucial topic when teaching English as a foreign language.
