| dc.description | Due to the lack of original documents, the founding of the Jesuit College of Mérida, Yucatán in 1618 is usually dealt with on the basis of secondary sources, such as chronicles. The discovery of the will of the founder, Captain Martín de Palomar (1538-1611) clarifies the circumstances surrounding the founding processes and sheds light on the personality and activities of this patron, who also made significant donations for religious works in Yucatán and Medina del Campo, his native city. This introductory study provides information on Palomar and his family, some of his activities as alderman of Mérida, encomienda holder and merchant and describes the advisors who encouraged him to donate part of his considerable fortune to building the college and taking the first steps towards its creation. Two complementary legal pieces are published by way of an appendix: the donation contract and the royal letters patent approving the measure. | en-US |

El hallazgo del testamento del fundador, el capitán Martín de Palomar (1538-1611), permite esclarecer las circunstancias del proceso fundacional y aporta insospechadas luces sobre la personalidad y actividades del mecenas, quien además realizó notables legados píos, en favor de Yucatán y de Medina del Campo, su ciudad natal. El estudio introductorio informa acerca de Palomar y su familia, de algunas de sus actividades como regidor de Mérida, encomendero y mercader, y da cuenta de los consejeros que lo animaron a donar parte de su notable fortuna para erigir el colegio, y los primeros pasos hacia su creación. A modo de apéndice se publican dos piezas legales complementarias: el contrato de donación y de la cédula real que aprobó la medida. | es-ES |
