In this class Professor John Merriman talks mostly about socialism, but also a little about syndicalism in France. The history of socialism in France has always been a competition between revolutionary socialists and reform socialists. While reform socialists attempted to improve conditions for workers by means of reforms within the political system, the revolutionary socialists advocated abandoning electoral politics. Jean Jaures is the leader who unites these two types of socialists. Jules Guesdes is the figurehead of the revolutinary socialists and Paul Brousse of the reform ones
