The fundamental law of fractions states that the value of a fraction does not change when its numerator and denominator are both multiplied by the same non-zero number. It can be applied to add or subtract two fractions (a/b) and (c/d). Multiply the first by (d/d) and the second by (b/b). Then the fractions have a common denominator (not necessarily the lowest!) and the new numerators can be added: (ad/bd)+(bc/bd)=(ad+bc)/bd
