The Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem is named after the numerical experiments first performed by Enrico Fermi, John Pasta, and Stanislaw Ulam . This simulation recriates their attempt to understand how a crystal evolves toward thermal equilibrium. It solves numerically the equations of the dynamics of a chain of particles coupled by non-linear springs. One can think of the modes of vibration of the crystal as isolated system that interact throught the non-linear term of the hamiltonian.
