dc.descriptionThis paper presents the results of a study conducted in an elementary school in Mexico, which suffers from a severe epidemic of childhood obesity, on the effects on motor development in obese and overweight children. The research was quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive, and correlational with the variables body mass index (BMI) status, and motor development, which was determined by means of the TGMD-2 battery, with a non-random sample of 119 children from four upper elementary school groups. The main findings were that group, gender and age factors influence the BMI status of the students and that there is an inverse correlation between BMI and motor development, since children with a higher index had a lower performance in the tests. It is concluded that the work of the physical educator is fundamental to encourage children and adolescents to value their health, give them varied opportunities for physical activation, and promote healthy lifestyles, but is also necessary a political effort to modify habits rooted in the population, such as the consumption of fast food, without nutritional value and highly caloric, such as sugary drinks, and to introduce healthy habits in the contents of physical education classes and, in general, in the school culture.en-US
dc.descriptionEn este artículo se presentan los resultados de un estudio realizado en una escuela primaria de México, que sufre una severa epidemia de obesidad infantil, acerca de las afectaciones al desarrollo motor en niños y niñas con obesidad y sobrepeso. La investigación fue cuantitativa, no experimental, descriptiva y correlacional con las variables estatus de índice de masa corporal (IMC) y desarrollo motor, el cual se determinó mediante la batería TGMD-2, con una muestra no aleatoria de 119 niños y niñas de cuatro grupos primaria alta. Los principales hallazgos fueron que los factores grupo, género y edad influyen en el estatus de IMC de los estudiantes y que existe una correlación inversa entre éste y el desarrollo motor, pues los niños con más alto índice tuvieron un menor desempeño en las pruebas. Se concluye que el trabajo del educador físico es fundamental para animar a niños y adolescentes a valorar su salud, presentarles oportunidades variadas de activación física y promover estilos de vida saludable, pero también un esfuerzo político por modificar hábitos arraigados en la población, como el consumo de comida rápida, sin valor nutricional y altamente calórica, como las bebidas azucaradas, e introducir hábitos saludables en los contenidos de las clases de educación física y, en general, en la cultura escolar.es-ES
