Course Description Sustainable design and planning is a framework for how we plan, build, and live in our built environments in a way that better balances environmental, social, and economic demands. The focus of this course is on developing an understanding of the complex issues associated with sustainability in the built environment and exploring the ways in which sustainable principles and working tools can be applied to address these issues. This course takes an interdisciplinary approach in addressing the various dimensions of sustainability in order to reflect the interests of the citizens, design professionals, and policy makers who are involved in addressing the issues and concerns of our communities. It covers the historical trends of the natural and cultural environment, such as eras in climatic variation, industrialization, transportation, energy and water-use, animal and plant adaptation, and the role of human intervention in various systems. Students will encounter alternate designed environment future scenarios based on various models of growth and resource-use that promote stewardship and sustainability. The course will explore the economic, social, and environmental challenges and potential solutions in each topic area. Students will be encouraged to consider the economic viability, public policy implications, and social costs and inequities of potential solutions. Prerequisites No prerequisites are required beyond a computer, a reliable internet connection, and working knowledge of D2L are expected of all students. Course Instructors Joey Iuliano Graduate Associate, College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture 1jiuliano@email.arizona.edu (expect a response within 24 hours) Joey Iuliano is a graduate from CAPLA's Planning program (MS '15) and has Ph.D. (¿21) in Geography. Before UA, Joey attended Purdue University and received a master's in Health and Kinesiology (MS '12) and bachelor's in Organizational Leadership and Supervision (BS '10). Joey's research interests are how the built environment influences people's transportation choices, specifically when it comes to active transportation. Erika Ebermann Vera Professor, Architecture at UPC erikaebermann@arizona.edu Erika Ebermann Vera is a professor in the Faculty of Architecture in the UPC (Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas in Lima, Peru).
