dc.description | ABSTRACT: Despite the wide distribution of the red howler monkey in Colombia, wild populations are affected by hunting, trafficking, and habitat fragmentation. The diversity and current genetic structure of the species were studied in Otún Quimbaya Fauna and Flora Sanctuary and other regions across northern-central Colombia using non- invasive methods. Genetic variation in the mitochondrial D-loop region evaluated and, a network of haplotypes (mitochondrial lineages) and a phylogenetic tree of Bayesian inference were constructed. A high nucleotide and haplotype diversity was identified in the Santuary in relation to the entire sample, as well as evidence of gene flow among social groups. The haplotype network revealed a pattern compatible with a historical process of population expansion. The phylogenetic tree identified two well-differentiated lineage groups (haplogroups), albeit with mixed geographic distributions compatible with high dispersion, and a possible effect of the eastern Andes cordillera on the intraspecific differentiation. This information is the first step in a process aimed to proposing management actions that support conservation strategies in the protected area and other protected areas.
