dc.descriptionThe natural reproductive cycle of females of the armoured catfish Hypostomus commersonii (Valenciennes, 1840) in lenght class distinct is described with reference to gonadosomatic indices and monthly relative frequency of the maturity stages. Relation to the changing environmental fators is discussed. The annual cycle consist of effective maturation period (August to October), spawning period (November and December) and recuperation period (March to July). The largest size fish spawn before the smallest ones. The maturation occurs when the temperature and day-length are increasing, while the spawning is verified when the rainfall reaches the annual maximum, the temperature average is above 18° C and the daylength exceeds 13 hours. Evidence is presented that the spawning is total.
dc.descriptionO ciclo reprodutivo de fêmeas do cascudo Hypostomus cormmersonii (Valenciennes, 1840) na represa Capivarí-Cachoeira (25°07' Lat. S, 48°44' Long.W) é analisado com base na variação mensal da relação gonadossomática e freqüência de estádios de maturação, para três estratos distintos de tamanho de peixes adultos. Sua relação com os fatores ambientais é discutida. O ciclo consiste de um período de maturação efetiva (agosto a outubro), um de desova (novembro a fevereiro) e um de inatividade reprodutiva (março a julho). Os indivíduos de maior porte desovam antes daqueles menores. A maturação ocorre quando a temperatura e o comprimento do dia estão aumentando, enquanto a desova se verifica quando as precipitações pluviométricas alcançam seu máximo anual, a temperatura média é superior a 18°C e o comprimento do dia excede 13 horas. São apresentadas evidências de que a desova é total.
