| dc.description | The objective of this research is to understand how Spiritism, a foreign religious
doctrine born in the midst of modernity, managed to break with the Catholic
hegemony of Barbacena-MG and establish itself in Ponte do Cosme, a rural district
of this city. For that, we seek to reveal the processes of insertion, diffusion and
legitimation of Spiritism in Ponte do Cosme, having as object of study the Spiritist
Center Amor à Verdade and its agents, thus investigating the continuities, ruptures
and new arrangements that our object develops in relation to the formation process
of Spiritism in Brazil. The research takes a period between the 1920s, when the first
movements of spiritual phenomena appeared in the district, and goes until the first
half of the 1940s, with the construction of the first headquarters of the local Spiritist
Center. Methodologically, we start from a bibliographic review on the subject, seeking
to frame our object in a scenario of general development of the Brazilian Spiritist
movement. To survey the sources of the research, we resorted to participant
observation, the use of a field notebook, the application of semi-structured interviews
and a careful investigation of the historical records of the agents and institutions that
encompass the object of this research. It was noted that the insertion of Spiritism in
the Ponte do Cosme district is due to the spiritual healing of Pati and Alexandrino
and that through this healing event, both adopt the spiritist religious identity and
begin to disseminate the Doctrine in a rural environment. There is a strong link with
regulatory and unifying institutions of the Spiritist movement at the municipal, state
and national level, so that our object counted not only with guidance, but with
institutional interference on the part of these entities in a period of consolidation of a
hegemonic model of Spiritist Center. Finally, we consider that, more than simply not
presenting a rupture with Catholicism, the case studied shows the assimilation of
certain elements of Catholic culture, such as the performance of “catechism”,
“weddings” and “baptisms”, bringing an original arrangement between the Doctrine
born in the midst of modernity and classic elements of the dominant religion. | |
| dc.description | O objetivo desta pesquisa é de compreender como o Espiritismo, uma
Doutrina religiosa estrangeira nascida no bojo da modernidade conseguiu romper
com a hegemonia católica de Barbacena-MG e se estabelecer em Ponte do Cosme,
um distrito rural desta cidade. Para tanto buscamos desvelar os processos de
inserção, difusão e legitimação do Espiritismo em Ponte do Cosme tendo como
objeto de estudo o Centro Espírita Amor à Verdade e seus agentes, investigando
assim as continuidades, rupturas e novos arranjos que o nosso objeto desenvolve
em relação ao processo de conformação do Espiritismo Brasileiro. A pesquisa
assume um recorte temporal entre a década de 1920, quando surgiram os primeiros
movimentos dos fenômenos espirituais no distrito e vai até a primeira metade da
década de 1940, com a construção da primeira sede do Centro Espírita local.
Metodologicamente partimos de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o tema buscando
um enquadramento do nosso objeto em um cenário de desenvolvimento geral do
movimento Espírita Brasileiro. Para o levantamento das fontes da pesquisa
recorremos à observação participante, o uso do caderno de campo, a aplicação de
entrevistas semiestruturadas e uma cuidadosa investigação em registros históricos
dos agentes e instituições que abarcam o objeto desta pesquisa. Notou-se que a
inserção do Espiritismo no distrito de Ponte do Cosme se dá em função da cura
espiritual de Pati e Alexandrino e que através deste evento de cura, ambos adotam a
identidade religiosa espírita e passam a disseminar a Doutrina em um ambiente
rural. Percebe-se um forte vínculo com instituições regulatórias e aglutinadoras do
movimento Espírita a nível municipal, estadual e nacional, de maneira que nosso
objeto contou não só com a orientação, mas com uma interferência institucional por
parte destas entidades em um período de consolidação de um modelo hegemônico
de Centro Espírita. Por fim, consideramos que, mais do que simplesmente não
apresentar uma ruptura com o Catolicismo, o caso estudado evidencia a assimilação
de certos elementos da cultura católica, como a realização de “catecismo”,
“casamentos” e “batizados” trazendo um arranjo original entre a Doutrina nascida no
bojo da modernidade e elementos clássicos da religião dominante. | |
