Wilhelm Ludwig Johannsen (1857-1927) coined the terms gene, genotype and phenotype, in the early 20th century. Besides that, he distinguished the concepts of genotype and phenotype. This paper tracks down the development of some features of Johannsen’s thought that led to the creation of those concepts, which are present on the article “The genotype conception of heredity”, published in 1911 in the journal The American Naturalist. From an analysis of secondary literature related to Johannsen’s work, it will be shown that there were changes in his thought concerning the concept of genotype from 1909 to 1926. There was a shift from an abstract concept to a material one, which would correspond to genes, but they would not be located on chromosomes.
