Carcinoma de células escamosas oral de alto grado con metástasis pulmonar en erizo pigmeo africano (Atelerix albiventris): Reporte de un caso

dc.descriptionLos erizos pigmeos africanos (Atelerix albiventris) han incrementado su presencia como mascotas a nivel mundial. Estos se han hecho cada vez más comunes. Debido a ello, las notificaciones y los reportes de enfermedades, incluyendo los procesos neoplásicos, han aumentado considerablemente. El presente reporte corresponde a un caso de carcinoma de células escamosas de alto grado en un erizo pigmeo africano de interior, macho de siete años, con lesión a nivel de la mandíbula izquierda en su porción caudal. Dicha lesión generó daño y fractura en un diente, lo cual fue evidenciado clínica y radiológicamente. El paciente presentó pérdida de peso progresiva, y finalmente se tuvo que realizar la eutanasia, previa autorización y consenso con su tutor. Al momento de la necropsia, el paciente presento una lesión nodular, blanquecina de cinco a siete centímetros de diámetro, firme y solitaria, de bordes no definidos, la cual, por su expansión y compresión, ocasionó daño a nivel de cornetes nasales. Al evaluar la cavidad torácica, se encontraron lesiones de características similares a nivel pulmonar, de modo que las más evidentes fueron las del lóbulo izquierdo en su porción craneal. En tanto, los análisis histopatológicos e inmunohistoquímicos confirmaron un evidente comportamiento agresivo e infiltrativo con presencia de émbolos neoplásicos en lumen de vasos linfáticos y metástasis pulmonar. El presente caso corresponde a uno de los primeros reportes de este tipo de metástasis pulmonar de carcinoma de células escamosas en erizos pigmeos africanos a nivel mundial.
dc.descriptionAfrican pygmy hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris) are an increasingly more common pet worldwide. In such species, the highly invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) clinical reports are even more usual. Our report presents a 7 years old indoor male African pygmy hedgehog, with a high grade and infiltrative SCC. Such condition induced left mandible caudal portion fracture, and tooth damage, clinically and radiologically evidenced. The patient presented progressive weight loose, and, finally, the euthanasia protocol was authorized by the owners. At necropsy, a 5-7 cm diameter whitish nodular, firm and solitary oral lesion was found, which caused oral damage and nasal turbinates compression. Also, another distant and solitary whitish nodular lesion was evidenced at the left lung cranial lobe. Histopathologic, histochemistry and immunohistochemical findings confirmed a high grade and infiltrative SCC with lung metastasis, and neoplastic emboli on lymph vessels both in oral and lung samples. Therefore, this is the first reported case with these histopathologic features.
