Primary magma fragmentation is the driving mechanism of explosivity in volcanic eruptions and is responsible for the production of pyroclastic fragments. The determination of the fragmentation style in eruptions is a useful tool in risk management to evaluate the danger of volcanoes and to avoid vulnerability. In this work, samples of fine to very fine ashes were selected for three stations of the Silencio and Las Mesas formations, deposited on the western side of the Doña Juana Joven volcano. A morpho-textural analysis of components at different scales was generated, with the purpose of establishing and contrasting the fragmentation mechanisms that originated the deposits. In particular, evidence of a magmatic fragmentation mechanism, driven by sudden decompression processes on a rheologically heterogeneous melt, was found for both eruptions. It was determined that the vast majority of fragmented particles originated from material that pre-existed the eruption, forming part of a dome or volcanic structure. For the fragmentation process, fragile melt responses were associated with high rates of viscoelastic deformation exerted at the instant of decompression due to the presence of a highly viscous magma. Considering the small amount of analyzed particles from the Las Mesas Formation, we suggest the elaboration of a specific morphotectural study focused exclusively on the particles of this formation, in order to complement the analysis carried out so far.
