Networks provide entrepreneurs with inputs to take market opportunities, as well as information and punishment channels to enforce contracts. Since these functions may conflict, the trade-off between them is critical for micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in developing countries with weak institutions. This study analyzes a Peruvian textile cluster using data from 2013. Using Latent Class Analysis (LCA), I identified four network formation strategies based on their degree of openness and closure. In line with the literature, closed network strategies were related to higher levels of trust, and vertical integration. On the other hand, more open strategies had higher levels of sales, digitalization, outsourcing, and financing activities. Finally, an analysis of survival was done. I found a higher probability of survival for firms in the middle (i.e., partially extended and partially restricted networks), suggesting the importance of balancing the benefits of network openness with that of network closure.
