dc.description.abstract | This dissertation argues that, even as a literary artifact, Paul Auster's City of Glass (1985) works as a cinematographic montage. Based on theoretical approaches by Vilém Flusser, Susan Sontag, Gilles Deleuze and Ricardo Piglia, this analysis focuses on how the association of images inside the narrative framework determines its plot and, therefore, refers to the false spatio-temporal continuity of film. Likewise, it investigates the novel's fracture with detective fiction archetypes, through the immersion of chance in the staging of the private eye's investigation, and the "montage" in the paranoid detection of an enigma that utterly vanishes. This proposal plays with various intermediality principles and with the idea of literature-to-cinema adaptations as constellations by assembling, within the same document, a montage between literary analysis and the novel's adaptation to screenplay format.
