"La elegante sencillez […] de una vida civilizada" o "el grado de perversión más supremo del decoro": las Pompeyas colombianas

Abstract

Durante el siglo XIX, los yacimientos de Pompeya y Herculano se convirtieron en destinos populares para viajeros de diversas partes del mundo, bien fuera por la admiración que sentían algunos por la Antigüedad clásica o sólo por la curiosidad que despertaban las ciudades sepultadas. Colombianos como el político y militar Joaquín Acosta y el diplomático Nicolás Pardo visitaron los sitios y dejaron sus impresiones en cartas y diarios de viaje. Este capítulo analiza a través de dichas fuentes, el relato sobre el mundo romano construido por estos personajes y el eco social que tuvo su visita.

During the 19th century, the sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum became popular destinations for travellers from various parts of the world, either because of the admiration felt by some for classical antiquity or just because of the curiosity aroused by the buried cities. Colombians such as the politician and military Joaquín Acosta and the diplomat Nicolas Pardo visited the sites and left their impressions in letters and travel diaries. This chapter analyzes through these sources, the story about the Roman world built by these characters and the social echo that his visit had.
