Miradas femeninas sobre Pompeya y Herculano: Aurelia Castillo de González, "Araceli" y Carmen de Burgos Colombine

Abstract

El capítulo analiza la experiencia de tres viajeras, la cubana Aurelia Castillo y las españolas Carmen de Burgos y Araceli, en Pompeya y Herculano. Ellas fueran de las pocas mujeres que, después de su visita a los yacimientos, dejaron rastro de su vivencia y sus impresiones en forma escrita, en artículos de periódicos y revistas y literatura de viaje, ofreciendo una mirada personal y femenina sobre el mundo antiguo.

This chapter focuses on the experiences of three women travelers, the Cuban Aurelia Castillo and the Spanish Carmen de Burgos and Araceli, who visited Pompeii and Herculaneum between the end of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century. Their experience is especially important since they wrote their feelings and opinions in newspaper and review articles and in travelogues. Through these writings they give us their personal point of view on the ancient Roman world, represented by the two cities buried by the Vesuvius.
