De volta à África : "retornados" brasileiros no Antigo Reino do Daomé (1845-1850)

Abstract

This monograph aims to elaborate on the contribution of Brazilian returnees and their performance within the socio-economic situation of the Kingdom of Dahomey, during the second half of the nineteenth century. Our sources, reports travel, Travels in Western Africa in 1845 & 1846 : A Journey from Whydah , through the Kingdom of Dahomey to Adofoodia by John Duncan and Dahomey and the Dahomans : Being the journals of two missions to the king of Dahomey , and residence at his capital in the years 1849 and 1850 by Frederick Forbes. To understand the contribution of Brazilians returned, it was necessary to reflect on the economic trajectory of the Kingdom of Dahomey, paying attention to the reign of amendments Ghezo . Analyze the African space allowed us , together , to understand more deeply the travelers representation, John Duncan and Frederick Forbes, built on this location . The discussion of the representation of the Brazilian community, from travel accounts, was also considered in this work as one of the goals .

Esta monografia tem por objetivo dissertar sobre a contribuição dos retornados brasileiros e sua atuação dentro da conjuntura sócio-econômica do Reino do Daomé, durante a segunda metade do século XIX. Utilizamos como fonte, os relatos de viagem, Travels In Western Africa, in 1845 & 1846: A Journey from Whydah, through the Kingdom of Dahomey to Adofoodia de John Duncan e Dahomey and the Dahomans: Being the journals of two missions to the king of Dahomey, and residence at his capital in the years 1849 and 1850 de Frederick Forbes. Para compreender a contribuição dos retornados brasileiros, foi necessário refletir sobre a trajetória econômica do Reino do Daomé, atentando sobretudo, para alterações apresentadas no reinado de Ghezo. Analisar o espaço africano nos possibilitou, conjuntamente, entender mais a fundo a representação que os viajantes, John Duncan e Frederick Forbes, construíram acerca desta localidade. A discussão sobre a representação da comunidade brasileira, à partir dos relatos de viagem, também foi contemplada neste trabalho, como um dos objetivos.
