| dc.description | The Potiguar Basin was created as a result of the distensional events
responsible for the fragmentation of Pangea and the consequent creation of the African
and South American continents. It is part of the set of basins originated due to the
deployment of the Brazilian Equatorial Margin. In the Potiguar basin, detailed studies
focused on deep water sequence stratigraphy still remain infrequent. Thus, this
research aims to better understand the tectonostratigraphic evolution of the studied
area, more precisely within the interval between the early Albian and middle Eocene
unconformities (sensu Pessoa Neto et al., 2007), which includes the sequences of the
transgressive drift phase and its change to the regressive drift phase of the basin. With
well data, seismic lines and a 3D seismic volume, the section of this study was
investigated in order to identify the depositional sequences, their internal units,
chronostratigraphic boundries, seismic facies, lithofacies and associated depositional
systems. The results of this investigation are eight stratigraphic sequences, named S1,
S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7 and S8, considering the higher resolution analysis from the well
data; these sequences, in the seismic data, were grouped in three seismic stratigraphic
units, US1, US2 and US3, with the oldest two of them being transgressive. This study,
based on models applied to the deep marine depositional environment, aimed to
understand the nature of sedimentation on the shelf edge and its influence on more
distal sectors of the basin, since such processes considerably control the gravitational
fluxes responsible for the transport, dispersion and deposition of sediments in deep
waters. Besides this, it is important to note that the Potiguar Basin has an exploratory
history for hydrocarbons, focused on its onshore portion. However, the recent oil
discoveries in its correlated basin in West Africa, the Benin Basin, signals a real
possibility of discoveries of new exploratory plays in the offshore portions of this basin,
mainly associated with turbidite deposits. | |

| dc.description | Formada a partir dos eventos distensivos responsáveis pela fragmentação do
Pangea e consequente geração dos continentes Africano e Sul-americano, a Bacia
Potiguar faz parte do conjunto de bacias originadas em decorrência da implantação
da Margem Equatorial Brasileira. Segmento este, cujos trabalhos voltados a
estratigrafia de sequências de águas profundas seguem pouco frequentes. Desta
forma, a pesquisa buscou promover um melhor entendimento da evolução
tectonoestratigráfica da área de interesse, mais precisamente do intervalo
compreendido entre as discordâncias do Albiano inferior e a do Eoceno médio (sensu
Pessoa Neto et al., 2007), que por sua vez abrange as sequências da fase drifte
transgressiva e sua mudança para a fase drifte regressiva da bacia. Com auxílio de
dados de poços, seções sísmicas e de um volume sísmico 3D, a seção alvo deste
estudo foi investigada de maneira a se identificar as sequências deposicionais, suas
unidades internas, superfícies cronoestratigráficas limítrofes, sismofácies, litofácies e
sistemas deposicionais associados. O produto gerado foi a delimitação de oito
sequências, denominadas S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7 e S8, considerando a análise
de maior resolução, referente ao dado unidimensional. Em se tratando de resultados
atribuídos a dados sísmicos, de natureza mais regional, essas sequências foram
agrupadas em três unidades sismoestratigráficas, nomeadas US1, US2 e US3, sendo
duas delas, as mais antigas, de caráter transgressivo. Este estudo, calcado em
modelos aplicados ao ambiente deposicional marinho profundo, teve por finalidade
compreender a natureza da sedimentação na borda da plataforma e sua influência em
setores mais distais da bacia, uma vez que tais processos controlam
consideravelmente os fluxos gravitacionais responsáveis pelo transporte, dispersão e
deposição de sedimentos em águas profundas. Além disso, é importante ressaltar que
a Bacia Potiguar possui um histórico exploratório para hidrocarbonetos, até o
momento muito focado em sua porção onshore. No entanto, as recentes descobertas
de óleo em sua bacia correlata no oeste africano, a Bacia de Benin, assinala uma
possibilidade real de descobertas de novos plays exploratórios nas porções offhore
desta bacia, notadamente associados a depósitos turbidíticos. | |
