dc.descriptionThe direct downward filtration is an operation widely used in water treatment plants, WTPs, to remove particles from raw water, aiming to attain the regulations and ordinances, such as those from the Health Ministry. Supplying about 92 thousand habitants of the city of Natal the Jiqui WTP has a direct descending filtration system that has not been modified since its beginning of operation. Due to changes over time in the hydrographic basin of the Pitimbu River, which feeds the WTP, it has not been able to meet the regulatory requirements as of today. The present document aims to elaborate a current diagnosis of the filtration system of the Jiqui WTP, mainly regarding the washing of the filters. The washing process was characterized by the evaluation of washing water’s turbidity at the filter outlet, as well as measuring the expansion of the filter medium during the procedure. For the present study, the turbidity of the filtered water was also monitored to ascertain the occurrence of impurities bypassing. In addition, the current condition of the sand filter medium was verified by characterizing the material’s granulometry, the bathymetry of the surface, and identifying the presence of « sludge balls ». The results confirm the non-compliance of the filtered water’s turbidity with the ordinance of the Ministry of Health and the current adequacy need of the washing process, with the reintroduction of the air washing originally foreseen in the ETA’s project.
dc.descriptionA filtração direta descendente é uma operação bastante empregada em estações de tratamento de água, ETAs, para remoção de partículas da água bruta, objetivando atender a regulamentações e portarias, como as do Ministério da Saúde. Abastecendo cerca de 92 mil habitantes da cidade de Natal, a ETA Jiqui possui um sistema de filtração direta descendente que não passou por modificações desde seu início de operação. Devido às alterações ao longo do tempo na bacia hidrográfica do Rio Pitimbu, que alimenta a ETA, não se tem conseguido atender às exigências regulamentadoras atualmente. A presente monografia visa elaborar um diagnóstico atual do sistema de filtração da ETA Jiqui, principalmente no tangente à lavagem dos filtros. O processo de lavagem foi caracterizado pela avaliação da turbidez da água de lavagem na saída do filtro, bem como pela medição de expansão do meio filtrante durante o procedimento. Para o presente estudo foi monitorada também a turbidez da água filtrada para averiguar a ocorrência do problema de transpasse de impurezas. Além disso, verificou-se as condições atuais do meio filtrante de areia, através da caracterização a granulometria do material, da batimetria da superfície e da identificação da presença de bolas de lodo. Os resultados confirmam o não atendimento da turbidez da água filtrada à portaria do Ministério da Saúde e a necessidade de adequação atual da lavagem, com a reinserção da lavagem com ar prevista originalmente em projeto.
